Lights Out
Let me say this plainly. This audiobook is the reason I slid headfirst into dark romance and never looked back. Lights Out is unhinged, funny, spicy, and somehow comforting in a way that should probably concern me.
First of all, Jacob Morgan absolutely stole the show. I mean stole it. His voice alone could convince you to make questionable choices, and in this audiobook he leaned fully into the dark romcom energy. The timing, the tone, the confidence, the playful menace. I was smiling like an idiot with my headphones on. He made the obsession charming, the danger hot, and the humor land perfectly. I get the hype now. Fully converted.
What makes this story work so well is that it does not take itself too seriously. Yes, it is dark. Yes, it is morally questionable. But it is also funny in a way that sneaks up on you. I laughed out loud more than once and immediately followed it up with wow I should not be enjoying this as much as I am.
The chemistry is instant and chaotic. The spice is bold but playful, never heavy or overwhelming. It feels flirty, a little feral, and completely addictive. This is dark romance with a wink, and that balance is what hooked me.
Lights Out made me realize that dark romance can be fun, ridiculous, and hot all at the same time. If you want an audiobook that eases you into the genre with humor, heat, and a narrator who knows exactly what he is doing, this is the one. I started this book curious and finished it fully committed to the dark side.
